FAQ

General Questions

What is the difference between Somatic Experiencing and traditional talk therapy?

Traditional therapy is often "top-down," focusing on the analytical mind and the narrative. Somatic Experiencing is "bottom-up." We focus on the nervous system and the body's felt sensations. Because the parts of your brain that handle survival and trauma don't speak in words—they speak in sensation—we go straight to the source to finish old stress cycles.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. In somatic work, we focus on the sensation of what is happening now rather than the story of what happened then. We move at the speed of safety, breaking down overwhelming experiences into small, digestible micro-shifts to avoid re-traumatization.

What does a "typical" session look like?

Every session is a partnership. We start by checking in on your goals, but we quickly move into tracking in the here and now. This might look like noticing a tightness in your chest or a buzzing in your legs. We pick one sensation and tune in, waiting for your system to feel safe enough to shift, release, or settle.

I don’t think I have any "capital-T" trauma in my history. Why does my body respond with such intensity?

Your body’s intelligence is highly adaptive, not broken. The nervous system doesn’t keep a ledger of "how bad" an event was compared to others—it simply tracks whether it had the resources to process what was happening in the moment.

You don’t need a reason or a specific memory to deserve a more regulated life. We don’t work to "find the trauma"; we work to listen to the language your body is speaking right now—and teach it that it’s finally safe to stop bracing.

Logistics & Modalities

How many sessions will I need?

Healing is a rhythm, not a race. While many clients feel a weight lifted after one session, deep-rooted patterns usually require a consistent commitment. Most clients find the most benefit in weekly or bi-weekly sessions over a 3-to-6-month period to build a larger window of tolerance.

Is virtual somatic therapy as effective as in-person?

Surprisingly, yes. Your nervous system is incredibly responsive to voice, facial expressions, and shared presence—all of which translate through a screen. Virtual sessions are a powerful way to prove that co-regulation transcends distance, and they allow you to integrate the work from the safety of your own home base.

What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and how does it help?

CST is a gentle, light-touch modality that monitors the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid. By tuning into this flow, I can help your central nervous system unwind deep-seated tension in the fascia and nerves. It is particularly helpful for those dealing with chronic pain, migraines, or a freeze response.

Specialized Care

I have a chronic illness (POTS, EDS, Fibromyalgia). Is this safe for me?

Absolutely. We work specifically to de-couple the "gas and brake" conundrum common in chronic illness. We don't push through pain—we look for the edges of safety and help your system find new possibilities of expression and ease.

Are you queer-affirming?

Yes. As a queer person myself, I aim to provide a safe, affirming, and inclusive space for all bodies, informed by anti-racist and sex-positive care.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance, although I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company.

Somatic work often falls outside the traditional medical model that insurance companies use to categorize care. By remaining independent, I am able to tailor our sessions to your unique nervous system without the constraints of a required diagnosis or a limited number of sessions dictated by a third party.

Is our work together confidential?

Yes, absolutely. I hold this work as sacred. Everything we discuss, every sensation we track, and the fact that you are a client of mine is held in the strictest confidence.

My commitment to your privacy means:

  • Total Anonymity: I will never share that you are a client of mine with anyone else.
  • The "Run-In" Rule: If we happen to see each other out in the world, I will follow your lead. To protect your privacy, I won't initiate a greeting unless you do so first.

A Sacred Container: Your story and your process stay within our sessions. This safety is the foundation upon which your nervous system can finally begin to thaw and reorganize.
